The State of Ale

An independent annual report on British cask ale

The State of Ale

How good it is in the glass, and how it is doing as a market.

Coming in February 2027

Cask ale is losing ground, and everyone in the trade has a confident explanation for why. We are testing those explanations against the evidence: thirty years of CAMRA’s filed accounts, HM Revenue and Customs beer clearances, the Companies House brewery register, and conversations with the people who brew cask and sell it.

The first edition is due in February 2027. Until then the working drafts are shared privately with people who know the trade, so they can tell us what we have got wrong.

We share the rough drafts with brewers, publicans, pub companies, campaigners and researchers. Tell us who you are and we will set you up with your own login.

We use what you send only to set up your login and to reply to you. It is not shared, and we will delete it if you ask. This page sets no cookies and runs no analytics.
